Scholarship on religion has grown exponentially in the field of International Relations (IR) in the past decade. Within this flourishing debate, scholars have tended overwhelm- ingly to address broad theoretical questions. As a result, the paucity of empirically grounded research and middle-level theorising is increasingly felt. That religion is important and that IR theory needs to account for its influence appears increasingly obvi- ous to many.
